Declaring Independence, or Not?

Sent in Tips

Apart from the United Kingdom, Elizabeth II is also Queen of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, Barbados, the Bahamas, Grenada, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, and Saint Kitts and Nevis, where she is represented by Governors-General. The 16 countries of which she is queen are known as Commonwealth Realms, and their combined population is 128 million. The Crown's expences are paid for out of Royal estates and income, and by the British Parliament exclusively.

The Jamacian Prime Minister has expressed Republican Sentiment due mostly to a change in the BBC's News Service. Half Jamacian's wish to remain loyal to Queen Elizabeth II until the end of Her Reign at least, and even had a portrait of Her during the Last Royal Visit by Prince Harry. Two Australian Prime Minister's have also expressed Republican sentiment, but this is not total. Northern Queenland is fiercely loyal, and Western Australia is also Loyal. Darwin, Northern Territory is Loyal to a point even though it probably hasn't had a Royal Visit; and Sydney is somewhat loyal. Québec is Loyal to Queen Elizabeth and a United Canada, and will swear allegiance to the Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales. And New Brunswick is Loyal to the Crown, and a United Canada whatever. Fiji was sad and unhappy it gave up the Crown, due to population problems with a lot of Indians, in their smallish Island.

I myself have declared Independence twice out of 70 games just to see what happens. Britain did have a Parliament during the American War of Independence, and the 13 Colonies had no political representation. They were taxed highly to pay for the cost of the French and Indian War (7 Years War) against the French Crown in Québec (1754-53).

The United Empire Loyalist's of Canada remained loyal to the Crown during and after the War of Indpendence. Some fled the new United States for Yorktown (Toronto, on Lake Ontario). Thunder Bay is also in the Province of Ontario. Nova Scotia built 50 Wooden Frigate War Ships for the British. And is prepared to build 40 more in the somewhat distant future if needed. Newfoundland and Labrador make a lot of Fish from the 'Grand Banks', plus Newsprint. Prince Edward Island Province is named is honour of King George III Son, Prince Edward Augustus, the Duke of Kent (1767–1820). Great Britain obtained the island from France under the terms of the Treaty of Paris in 1763 which settled the Seven Years' War.

Quebec has the big cities of Montreal, and Québec City. It makes a lot of lumber, is a key trade route down the Saint Lawrence River, and a long the Trans-Canadian Railroad. It also has big Hydro-Electric Dams. Royal Canada, Ontario Province where Toronto and the Niagara Falls are, is quite rich. It can get quite hot there. The Praire Provinces of Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta make a lot of Wheat, and Beef, and some Buffalo (around Calgary). A lot of Wheat is exported to Siberia, and China. But the first two Provinces are a long way from the main Port of Vancouver, British Columbia.

Most countries in the Commonwealth are linked to Britain due to Trade, and the Sea.

The British traded with the West Indies mainly for Rum, made from Sugar. The Sailors liked a Tot of Rum. There were also Pirate Ships in the 'Spanish Maine', most with 1/3 African Ancestry Crew. Based mainly in Port Royal, East Jamaica. Which fell into the sea during a Earthquake. The town of Fort Royal is nearby now. Most Pirates were 'Hearty Lads'. Ginger, and Jamaican Ginger Cake also come from Jamaica.

You can't declare Independence until Sons of Liberty Memberships in your Colonies is greater than 50%. But it is best to wait until it reaches 100%. Try and always have 3 Statesmen, preferably experts, in each of your Colonies all the time. This will increase efficiency, get you more Members of Congress faster, and during the War mean a Foreign Power will send you troops quicker. There is no point Declaring Independence before the Tax Rate exceeds 50%, as Custom houses charge a 50% Tariff during the War anyway. Before declaring Independence make sure:

Do all this and you have a very good chance of winning. Be Prepared! Your Colonies will be blockaded most of the time, so suspend trade routes, and monitor Colonists working outdoor squares. You will receive a Colonial Ambush Bonus, and Naval Bombardment Bonus (when your Allies join you). The Kings Forces also get a Naval Bombardment Bonus. Your Allies will also give you Soldiers, Dragoons, Artillery, and the All Powerful Men-O-War Warships (which you can't get any other way). Mercenary Forces may also be offered if you have a fat enough treasury. If you lose all your Ports, or the Crown controls 90% of your population, you've lost.
